The Kindergarten curriculum aims to produce active young Filipino learners who are holistically developed and equipped with 21stcentury skills. Hence, the Curriculum is designed to:
● Foster development of learners’ identity, social and emotional development, cognitive ability, physical health, and positive attitudes.
● Develop learners’ 21st century skills.
● Provide learners with experiences that are actively engaging in meaning-making through hands-on activities.
● Provide learners with varied opportunities to enjoy activities that are developmentally appropriate.
● Stimulate learners’ intellectual ability, creativity, communication skills, and critical thinking.
● Enhance learners’ spirit of teamwork through collaborative activities.
● Foster learning experiences and content that are nationalistic and culturally responsive, compatible, and relevant to thelearner.Kindergarten Education espouses a learner-centered curriculum that aims to develop holistic learners equipped with foundationalskills imbued with physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and values development. This is attained through play-based learning whichis anchored on the developmentally - appropriate practices and theories with consideration of learners’ expanding environment towardlife-long learning.
Grade 1:Age: Around 6-7 years old.
Focus: This is the beginning of formal education. In Grade 1, students are introduced to foundational concepts in literacy and numeracy. Reading and Writing: Students learn to read and write simple words, sentences, and basic paragraphs. Phonics, word families, and sight words are emphasized.
Math: Basic arithmetic, including addition and subtraction with single digits. Introduction to simple patterns and shapes. Social Skills: Developing friendships, following rules, and learning to share and collaborate.
Grade 2:Age: Around 7-8 years old.
Focus: Building on what was learned in Grade 1. Students start to refine their skills in reading, writing, and math.
Reading and Writing: Students begin reading simple chapter books. They work on writing complete sentences and short stories.
Math: Addition and subtraction with larger numbers. Introduction to multiplication and division concepts.
Science and Social Studies: Simple topics like weather, animals, community helpers, and basic geography.
Grade 3:Age: Around 8-9 years old.
Focus: Greater independence and academic expectations. More emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving.
Reading and Writing: Reading more complex texts and writing longer compositions with structure. Focus on grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Math: Multiplication and division facts, understanding place value, and the introduction to fractions.
Science and Social Studies: More detailed study of ecosystems, the human body, local history, and geography.
Grade 4:Age: Around 9-10 years old.
Focus: Critical thinking and application of skills become more important. Students become more focused on building knowledge across subjects.
Reading and Writing: Reading more challenging texts and summarizing them. Writing reports, essays, and persuasive pieces.
Math: Multiplication and division of larger numbers, introduction to decimals, and more complex word problems.
Science and Social Studies: Exploration of Earth science, simple chemistry, and deeper dives into history or other local history topics.
Grade 5:Age: Around 10-11 years old.
Focus: Increasing complexity in subjects, and a greater expectation for independence.
Reading and Writing: Students are expected to analyze texts, identify themes, and write detailed essays. Emphasis on editing and revising work.
Math: Decimals, fractions, percentages, and the introduction to basic geometry concepts such as area and volume.
Science and Social Studies: Study of physical and Earth sciences, the solar system, and early civilizations.
Grade 6:Age: Around 11-12 years old.
Focus: Preparing for middle school. Increased responsibility and focus on study skills.
Reading and Writing: Students read longer novels and explore deeper themes. Writing includes research reports, persuasive essays, and narrative writing.
Math: More advanced math including operations with fractions, decimals, and the introduction to algebraic concepts.
Science and Social Studies: Study of more advanced topics like human anatomy, ecosystems, and ancient civilizations (e.g., Egypt, Greece, Rome).
Throughout these grades, students begin to develop their academic, social, and organizational skills, and their knowledge base grows across subjects, setting the stage for the more complex work they will face in middle school and beyond.
